A home based business can take time away from your children if you aren’t careful.  Of course you have the responsibilities of running a business on your own.  There are deadlines and invoices to worry about.  You can find yourself spending extra hours in the home office trying to get things done.

A good number of home based business owners run into this problem. Taking care of children and keeping the home based business in tact can be very difficult.  You can find yourself feeling like you are in a no win situation.  However there are ways to keep your business up and running and still have enough time for your children.

Keep your time for family and your business separate.  There has to be a routine in place.  Just because you work from home you cannot let the home office hold you hostage.  Do not spend your day working and then pick up a few more hours in the evening.  Part of the reason for working from home is to have some personal freedom but you should still have some sort of schedule.  This will help stop the overlapping of time between children and work.

With that said, take into account that sometimes you kids are going to need you.  Even though you have set up a schedule and are trying to stick to it, if you children need you, then on that day, you need to revise the schedule.  The freedom does work both ways.  You really can finish whatever you are working on later, after you give your children the attention that they need.

There has to be some form of child care.  If you are a mom or dad that is working from home with children that are infants or toddlers, you will probably need some child care.  If you don’t have child care, then you will find yourself not able to work for a decent amount of time.

Your spouse may be the friendly recruit but if you are working opposite shifts, this may infringe on family time.  If your spouse is working all day they want to see you and your children when they come home.  You may need to seek other babysitting options when you are working.

As your children get older you will need to set some ground rules with your children.  As you evolve in your business there will be times that you are working.  Let your children know that this is not a time that you can be disturbed.  Just as you set ground rules in other situations about what is appropriate and what is not, you need to do that with your home based business.

As children age, you could include them in your home based business.  Think about all of the children that helped their parents on farms.  Well, you don’t want to get into that type of child labor but if there is something that you children can do, let them help.  A home based business often includes the family because of its location.  Find something that the kids can do.

What is a good home based business for someone who wants to stay home with their children?
I’m looking for something with flexible hours that I can generate a good paycheck with. No scams or telemarketing, nothing where I have to invest a ton of money

home based business, well do you know what that means. its home based, so the base or warehouse or office is at home so people save on paying rent otherwise they would have to rent an office or a storefront. All business involves sales, and that involves you going outside and pitching something to someone. Flexible hours is another thing, that not a typical job that goes from 9-5, this home based business is a job that can go over your normal 9-5. I hope that cleared what you think home based business is all about. Here are some options, theres alot of ebay sellers that are homebased business so they buy from china and sell on ebay to USA, theres multimarketing business but that involves alot of going out and pitching to people, usually starts with family pitching to join and that doesnt bring any money yet. In either case, i dont believe you can just jump into a homebased business like tomorrow because you wouldnt have that stable paycheck from your job. I would recommend working in a job and doing some ebaying if you are in need of quicker cash since multilevel marketing involves getting alot of people under you to do buying and marketing to other. In either case, get a book on each either multimarketing or selling on ebay.

A lot of your options depend on where you live.

Check with your local city business license office to find out what resources they can offer to you - you are looking to have the following questions answered:

Do I need a permit to operate any kind of business out of my home?

Do I need an inspection to operate certain kinds of businesses out of my home?

Do I need to be certified to run certain businesses in my area?

Do I need a city business tax license, state resale certificate or sales permit to operate certain kinds of businesses?

Depending on what your zoning and restrictions are, you might be interested in the following kinds of businesses:

Operating a small day care center for other peoples children since you are already home with your own. (You’ll probably need an inspection and certification for this, as well as a license.)

Work as a Virtual Office - you’ll accept phones calls on a dedicated phone line for other business people, taking messages and relaying those messages to the business person. (You’ll need to get a seperate phone line and be able to present an extremely professional phone experience - no children noise in the background!)

Learn to do taxes and start doing taxes for a fee. (You’ll need to get certified through classes, pass the exams and be able to post a bond. Then you need to market your service like crazy).

Tutor students in school subjects that you are good in.

Teach a skill that you have - painting, drawing, music, sewing, etc… to students in your home. (You’ll need to market your classes).

And the list goes on and on…

The biggest problem is that you are looking for a paycheck. Most small businesses don’t make a whole lot of positive cash flow without a whole lot of work.

I’ve been working for myself, based from my home, for 6 years, but I do a lot of stuff outside of my home to keep my business going!

Good books to read to learn about non-traditional work and small business start up are:

Joyfully Jobless - How to generate ideas for work and to keep you motivated when it’s hard to see any progress.

Before You Quit Your Job (one of the Rich Dad books) - Good things to know to build a solid foundation before trying to be your own boss.

Marketing Your Services For People Who Hate To Sell - A good look at what it will take to get business in your door - plus a lot of checklists and Action Excercises to do to help you pput what you read into practice.

Good Luck - I love being self-employed and would not trade my clients for three times the income and a steady paycheck!

It is absolutely

If you own a website you can be an Affiliate to a product site. I do online pharmacy. It doesn’t cost anything to be an affiliate. You post banners of the main sales site on your website, drive some traffic, and get paid per sale. Pretty easy stuff. Only a couple hours a day and your set. If your interested, here’s the program I use: apothecaryaffiliates.com

Let me know if you have any questions!

I started a home-based business as an Independent Consultant with Cookie Lee Jewelry. It’s such an amazing company, and is so wonderful for stay-at-home moms (like me!) The company was started because Cookie Lee herself wanted to be a stay-at-home mom for her two kids.
What is also wonderful about the company is that you can have your own business, with a product that everyone loves, and the room for growth is amazing. I absolutely love the what I do! If you would like more information on the jewelry, the company, or becoming a consultant, I would love give you more information. You can contact me directly through my website: http://www.cookielee.biz/juliecott
Good luck to you!

May I make a suggestion? Why not look at a company with over 50 years experience of helping women just like you and me, and yet is just at the ground floor of going around the world with its products.

Products are consumable. Things you already use. You start by using them yourself, and then work your business to grow your paycheck.

The company is Shaklee. The products are in the fast growing health and nutrition industry. They have been researched, proven, and are helpful to your family’s health.

I have gotten rid of my sinus infections and allergies. My son’s allergies were horrible, and now, as a teenager, he mows neighbors’ lawns for a Summer Job.

And I get to stay home with my kids, or take them with me on many of my business outings… since my customers are many young moms as well. Very family friendly and flexible.

Here is a 3-minute call that you can introduce yourself too. 1-925-924-3333

For more detail … here is a Saturday morning call (11am Eastern) that is called Project Mahma (mother’s at home making a difference… and a lot of money). Number is 1-212-990-8000 pin is 6262#. This may be a good way for you to investigate the opportunity. It lasts about 45minutes, and there are 2 or 3 keynote speakers each week.

Finally… you can contact me at http://www.shaklee.net/healthylives

Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I hope to hear from you soon.

There is a lot of great advice listed in your answers. I think you should identify a product line that allows your customers to order from you every month and you provide awesome one-on-one customer service supporting them. Another key point, find something where your products help people improve their quality of life. Lastly, what kinds of people will you be working with to help you succeed? These are 3 important questions to ask and answer. Before I go, make sure you check out the corporation and it’s vision too.

Hi,
There have been several different companies mentioned. It all depends on what you are wanting to do. I’m a homeschool mom. I work 3 different homebased businesses.
If you are concerned about using Earth friendly products and freeing your home of toxins and help others to do so..We have an opportunity for you.
Membership is very reasonable. It does involved using the computer & making a few calls. No cold calling.

This is a very tough question. I’m a full time worker who has a plan to work from home as of January 2008. I’ve done a lot of research into home-based businesses. I’ve lost a lot of money too. I’m glad that you are not going to fall in the same trap. I’m going to tell you only about the one opportunity that I have a feeling will help me to achieve my goal. I’ve managed to promote this opportunity for FREE. Things look very bright.

I could not rely on "programs". So I put most of my time on looking for solid companies. I found one. It is a Search Engine and besides money, if you dare stick around long enough, you could end up being able to sell adverts and being able to promote any business that you fancy.

Check it yourself and please let me know what you feel. I’m at charmza7@yahoo.com. I believe that you will make it big one day. Even if this one does not do it for you. I’m sure you will get what you want.

GOOD LUCK!

You want to make sure that the home based business has
some very basic fundamentals.
I would like to talk to you and here is a site to investigate.
Not a business site it is a question site.
http://www.freemoms.com/workathome

First thing you really need to know is WHY and this will help you do your home business even on a Monday.

To open a business with tax ID, business liscense, supplies, products, advertisement, time invested in going to social meetings to network is work!

So again do you really really know WHY?

I am also a stay at home mom and accidentally fell into the home-based business I have. I wasn’t looking for anything, but when I saw Discovery Toys products I knew that I wanted everything for my kids & could believe in the products. There is a start-up kit investment, but that is everything you need to get started and is very affordable!

Take a look at http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/janward to see if it’s right for you.

Every time I leave home, I end up at a party!

Best of luck finding the right business for you.

Direct sales and network/referral marketing both provide great avenues for stay at home moms to earn additional income from home, with the future potential to earn a full-time income. My advice to you is to start by identifying your interests, what do you like to do, what types of products/services are you interested in? Most often, your passion determines your success. To avoid scams, be sure to thoroughly research and ask lots of questions before committing to anything. You can also check for negative consumer references on bbb.org and ripoffreport.com. Hope this info helps, best wishes on your search…
